Randy Couture vs. Brock Lesnar posted on 09/09/2008

I would ask any readers to temporarily put aside their feelings about Brock Lesnar for just a minute in order to give me a legitimate answer to this question:  Why after two fights (one of which was a loss) does he deserve a shot at the heavyweight title?  Brock Lesnar, physically intimidating as he may be, has not shown himself to be a true MMA fighter.  Frank Mir showed us exactly how easy it could be to beat Lesnar in his debut fight.  On the subject of the Herring fight, the "Crazy Horse" lost because he let Lesnar get into his head, and in the end, Herring got scared.  Lesnar has absolutely NO experience on the ground, and had Herring gotten off of all fours and pulled a tight guard on him, Lesnar would have been submitted.

Lets take a look at Lesnar to start with.  He is by all means an amazing athlete, and a very physically intimidating person.  He has quite a bit of knockout power, and has shown that he can throw well placed punches.  All of these things put together make Brock Lesnar an aspiring..... BOXER!  He has shown us nothing with his legs (other than a horribly thought out flying knee which anybody could recreate fairly easily), hasn't been hit yet so we know nothing of his chin, and when the fight goes to the ground Mir has shown us how easily his eagerness can be his weakness.  A lot of questions will be answered about Lesnar as soon as we see him get hit.  I have a strong feeling that Lesnar's reaction will be very interesting from a mental standpoint.  Assuming that he can take a hit, and not get knocked out very easily; the question becomes how will he react mentally to somebody hitting him?  To a trained fighter it is just part of the game.  There are no emotions attached to it (other than those attached to any sporting event), and it is just expected that your opponent will fight back.  What we forget is that he has never been hit in a competitive event!  Lesnar may well not have enough mental control to not take getting hit personally, and as a result we may see him respond by getting mad and immediatly seeking redemption.  A flurry of haymakers would ensue, and his judgement would probably be clowded for awhile.  If he gets lucky, one of those punches lands, and it could work out for him in the end.  On the other hand, if he's fighting somebody as experienced as Couture, the odds are he will just walk right into another fist, or a takedown/submission attempt.  Of course, he may react like a professionaly and not attach any emotion to it.  Only time (and a five fingered wake up call) will tell.
