Ken Shamrock MMA founder, pioneer, embarrassment and wash-up

Ken Shamrock a name that's synonymous with MMA. A fighter at UFC 1 back when it was style vs. style. He lost in the semi-finals to the legend Royce Gracie. A few years later he'd fight Royce again to a draw at UFC 5 at that time an unheard of end for a Gracie fight. Shamrock leaves the UFC in 1996 to go fight in Pride. At the end of 2002 which I'll call his peak or at least before he started desecrating the sport that made him a household name his record was 20-7-2. He came back at UFC 40 to start his feud with Tito Ortiz. They had three fights Shamrock one none of them. In fact Kimo is the only guy he beat from 2/24/02 till 2/13/09.

During the seven years Ken repeatedly continued to make a joke out of himself and the sport. Not just with his stupid hot head antics which is really unbecoming any martial artist but with the fights he took. Like with Robert Berry a guy that's not even in the top 1000 fighters. Anyone ever heard of Robert "Buzz" Berry I haven't all his fights are in Cage Rage. Guess what he beat him to with a first round KO. So UFC take a look at Robert Berry I mean he beat a man you put in your HALL OF FAME!!! that should ensure him at least 2 or 3 fights in the octagon. I'm not even going to write about that crock of bull**** that EliteXC tired to pull with him and Kimbo. For the sport's sake thank whatever God you believe in the fight was called off.

So in February Wargods/Ken Shamrock Productions Staged a little event called St.Valentines Day Massacre. That's an appropriate Title for all it did for the sport. The event was co-headlined by Shamrock and Tank Abbott (I'll get to Abbott in another post) Shamrock fought Ross Clifton a super-heavyweight with a impressive 6-9 record. Never heard of Clifton either not surprised. Go check out Gladiator Challenge. Well the fight was a joke for Shamrock who easily out maneuvered and out classed the guy. To Clifton's credit he tried his best to take Shamrock out but it wasn't nearly enough. I just find it sad that Shamrock had to get that lopsided of a opponent to get his first victory in almost seven years. Yeah he's a legend alright.

You know MMA is the sport that I love and it's to young and fragile  to have these washed-up former UFC stars going around making this into a joke. The sport already had enough damage done to it thanks to Kimbo Slice. There are still alot of people that think that MMA is as scripted as the WWE, which is where maybe Ken should return to. I mean hell you crave the attention at least with the WWE you'd be in the spotlight. Then maybe you wouldn't get busted for steroids as often.

If you didn't know on Wednesday March 11th Ken Shamrock was suspended for a year due to steroids by the California State Athletic Commission. A testament to how he's handled his career for almost a decade.

One last thing in 2006 Shamrock announced his retirement from UFC after his last fight with Ortiz, Ken I respect what you've done for the sport and how you helped build it up. Don't tear down what's left of your legacy down trying to re-capture fading glory. It's time to retire before you make a bigger ass of yourself.
